The Kingdom - Die Zeit, die zählt

Korsika, 1995. Lesia erlebt ihren ersten Sommer als Teenager. Doch sie ist anders als die anderen: Denn sie ist die Tochter eines bekannten, untergetauchten Mafiabosses. Nach einem Autobomben-Anschlag ist der Clan alarmiert. Der Vater befürchtet die Folgen seiner eigenen Rachefeldzüge und will seine Tochter unbedingt davor schützen. Deshalb lässt er sie zu sich holen. Es beginnt eine Flucht, auf der Vater und Tochter lernen, sich erstmals wahrhaftig zu begegnen, zu verstehen und zu lieben.

Gewalt und Vendetta als Familienerbe - Regisseur Julien Colonna ist Sohn des mutmaßlichen Mafia-Bosses Jean-Jé Colonna, der 2006 bei einem Autounfall ums Leben kam. Mit „The Kingdom“ erzählt er seine eigene Geschichte mit einer weiblichen Protagonistin. Diese dringt in Sphären vor, von denen Frauen traditionellerweise ausgeschlossen sind. 

Der Film bekam nach seiner Premiere bei den Filmfestspielen in Cannes von Kritikern weltweit höchste Anerkennung.

“The Kingdom is a coming-of-age story: through Lesia’s journey I want to show the self-sacrifice she has to make in order to be accepted by adults, to survive this omnipresent threat of death, to have the perseverance to love her father and to be loved in return. My co-writer Jeanne and I wanted to portray a sentinel child, mature, her wound hidden away, kind and courageous, reasonable but obstinate.”
